Segenhoe’s front gate is 9.5km along Rouchel Road from the New England Highway turn off. Keep an eye out for the ‘Segenhoe Inn’, which is located at the intersection of Rouchel Road and the New England Highway. As you drive along Rouchel Road you will come to a clearly marked set of gates and entrance for Segenhoe on the left-hand side.

Segenhoe Stud has developed a 200-acre, world-class spelling and pre-training facility known as the Segenhoe Spelling Complex. 

Designed to facilitate all parts of the spelling and pre-training process, as well as allowing horses with injuries to be rehabilitated before going through a pre-training regime, the Spelling Complex consists of:

• Spacious 12-box (6m x 6m rubber-lined) stable complex, large water troughs for intake monitoring
• 42m x 20m undercover sand arena with the scope to be turned into another 12-box stable complex
• 12 self-contained, fully irrigated, tree-lane divided pastured paddocks with individual shelters
• Large 20-acre hill paddocks with improved pasture for horses who need to gain condition quickly
• Smaller 2-acre irrigated yards with improved pasture for horses requiring individual care
• 1200m undulating, irrigated grass exercise track
• 10-horse, undercover state-of-the-art walking machine

Segenhoe has approximately 10km of Hunter River frontage with a water licence of 1188.70ML. As the first property located just below Lake Glenbawn, Segenhoe has the first draw on water from the river, which enables us to have consistent access to the natural minerals and vitamins found in the crystal-clear flowing waters, year round.

The office is currently located over the Hunter River crossing about 50m on the left-hand side. Construction of a new purpose-built office and staff area are in the planning for the Rouchel Rd side of the river.

Barn
Our 20-box barn is used all year round from dry mares under lights (July – Oct) and for yearling, mare and weanling sale preparation (Nov – June). Horses that need extra handling and client-retained yearlings come in for short educational periods before going off to the breakers.

Each box is fully lined with foam padding to help prevent injuries from being cast or kicking out. All boxes have individual fans and large water troughs to monitor water intake throughout the night.

During the sales preparation horses are handled, educated, exercised, groomed and presented to members of the thoroughbred industry. All horses within the barn have their diet specifically calculated and formulated for their individual growing and presentation requirements.

Round Yard
The round yard is used to assist in educating and working yearlings during the sale preparation stage. Lunging at various speeds, diameters and times frames creates muscle tone, flexibility and softness. When we are breaking in on the farm, the round yard is an invaluable tool for young horses learning the ropes. The round yard provides a safe environment for both horse and rider in those first few critical lessons until the horse gains the necessary skills and confidence to start learning outside the enclosed area.

Yearling Run
The yearling run consists of 15 large post-, rail- and mesh-fenced paddocks with good shade facilities. These paddocks are used during the sale preparation of the yearlings and weanlings, enabling the young stock to stretch their legs, get some fresh air and exercise of a morning. We also use these paddocks for the mares and foals during the early part of the breeding season.

Walker
We have two 10-horse walkers at Segenhoe. One is at the main farm used for the yearlings in sale preparation and the other, a large new, covered state-of-the-art walker, is at Fairlight spelling complex. This one is used to assist in the rehabilitation and pre-training of racehorses.

Purpose built to cater for your valuable mare and the resultant foal, Segenhoe’s foaling area consists of the foaling unit as well as the foaling yards which are floodlit on a 12-hour timer so nothing is ever missed by our experienced staff.

Our staff members are attentive and extremely diligent at what is one of the most important times in the life of your mare. Experienced with all facets of the pre- and post-natal care, our staff ensure your mares and newborn foals are always Segenhoe’s number one priority.

In the event that things don’t go smoothly, our reproduction vet, general manager and vet nurse are all only minutes away and the Scone Intensive Care Unit is only a short float trip down the road.

The heavily pregnant mares are kept in foaling paddocks only a short walk from the individual foaling down yards, all the while under the watchful eye of our experienced staff members. Once it is clear that a mare is ready to foal, the mare is separated to foal down in one of several individual foaling down yards.

Your mare and foal will spend their precious first few days under constant watch of our knowledgeable staff whilst they bond in their own personal space before being moved at around four days old into a slightly larger individual yearling run.

After a week together they progress into a small group paddock with other mares and foals of similar age, which is an important step for their development not only physically, but also on a social level.

Feed Shed
With the aid of Kentucky Equine Research (KER) we have developed a feeding program in conjunction with our pastures. We mix all our own feeds; therefore, we know exactly what is going in the mix and we believe this gives our horses every opportunity to fully develop. Each horse, depending on their age, has a specific diet to suit their needs and growth requirements, allowing all stock to be at their peak physical condition.

Farm Workshop
An important part of having a successful farm is maintaining the pastures. We have recently upgraded all our equipment to ensure the continued success of the maintenance of the expanding properties.

Once considered Segenhoe’s main entrance, the Glenbawn Road entrance has transformed into an alternative entrance into the stud. Glenbawn Road is approximately 8km along Rouchel Road from the New England Highway turnoff. The entrance to the stud is on the right-hand side around 1.5km from the Rouchel Road turnoff.

The luxury Segenhoe Guest House, an old homestead on the previous Tyrells Glenbawn Property, has been beautifully renovated with four double bedrooms, large verandas and the ability to fish in the close by Glenbawn Dam. It is the perfect getaway for up to eight guests and can be booked for stays through the Segenhoe Stud office.

Lake Glenbawn, the lake that supplies water requirements through the Hunter Valley, is situated only moments from Segenhoe. Lake Glenbawn State Park offers a wonderful diversity of bushland and wildlife. Nature lovers and bushwalkers alike will enjoy the water sports, fishing, picnic areas, BBQs, playgrounds, tennis and boat hire. Lake Glenbawn is also one of the best freshwater fishing spots in New South Wales.

Segenhoe has three safe, shaded, fully watered and flood-lit arrival and departure areas within the farm. All areas are designed to cater for small transport vehicles up to large semi-trailer trucks. Our loading ramps and large laneways are purpose built for safety for foals, weanlings and unhandled stock that need to be loaded and unloaded with minimum stress.

All drop-off and pick-up areas are separate from the paddocks for the purposes of quarantine requirements. This is to protect not only our valuable resident horses but also the seasonal client mares and the racehorses coming and going from the property at regular intervals.

Adjacent to the Balmoral arrival and departure yards are the mesh yards and vet crush, which we use to house our yearlings as well as mares and foals in times when they require box rest. These yards are in close proximity to the vet crush area which is purpose built to allow your valuable mares to have vet check-ups in a safe area without their foal having to leave their side.

Occupying the former area know for it's Tyrells wines is now over 300 acres of beautifully developed paddocks for growing out quality thoroughbreds. The area also consists of a 10 box yearling barn & 10 horse walker.
