Inglis Scone 2YO Challenge to Voodoo Lad

Two wins from three starts – exciting two-year-old I Am Invincible gelding Voodoo Lad takes out the Inglis 2YO Challenge!!

Secured from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud at last year’s Inglis Scone Yearling Sale for $36,000, our two-year-old gelding Voodoo Lad proved too classy today, racing away to record an impressive victory in the $100,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge at the Scone racecourse.

Having won over 1000m last time out when racing first-up this campaign, trainer Rod Northam always had this race in mind for the son of I Am Invincible and the planning paid dividends.

Jumping away from barrier two, in-form jockey James McDonald drove along the rail with Voodoo Lad and within 200m he was on the rail in the lead.

As the field turned for home and the second horse started to challenge Voodoo Lad who was still leading, the I Am Invincible gelding kicked strongly, pulling away to record an emphatic victory for Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia (Mgr: K W Maloney), N S Leckie, D Anderson & P W Blackburn.

Astute local trainer Rodney Northam saddled up Voodoo Lad with Scone Racing Club president Noel Leckie in the ownership of the juvenile.

“He (Leckie) hated the name,”  Kevin Maloney from Segenhoe Stud told Sky Racing World.

“He bred the horse then asked if he could buy back into it.”

It was an exciting time for trainer Northam as he has now prepared three winners of the race in the last five years.

When interviewed post-race, he gave Voodoo Lad a glowing report.

“He is a lovely horse, and I really thought he would win”

“He is a horse who has a good future”.

Having only had two runs this time in, there are plenty of options for the two-year-old such as heading to Queensland for the Winter Carnival, or going for a spell and returning for some of the lucrative Spring races.
