Our Boy toys with the field to claim Gold Cup

SITTING second last and three wide around the turn was no issue for 2015 Carlton MID Coffs Harbour Gold Cup winner Our Boy Nicholas.

SITTING second last and three wide around the turn was no issue for 2015 Carlton MID Coffs Harbour Gold Cup winner Our Boy Nicholas.

The More Than Ready gelding had been set for the feature race a long time ago by the Toby Edmonds stable and a withering final furlong down the outside proved how ready he was for his grand final.

The three length margin to Got Unders and a further 1¼ lengths to third placed Hard Ticker showed how easy the win was in the end.

Roughly 30 seconds earlier though it was a win and a margin that looked highly unlikely for the heavily backed favourite.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla wasn’t concerned though.

“From the draw I just rode him quiet, he didn’t show much tactical speed and I was in the three-wide line but I always cover,” Avdulla said of the build up to the fast finish.

“He relaxed pretty well for me and the tempo was good, they kept on improving.

“Mid-race I wasn’t really worried. I just kept him comfortable, I stoked him up before the corner and when I got on the outside I knew I was going to run over them and when I asked him he really quickened well and put them away pretty quickly.”
