2015 The Phoenix result – Shinn gives Saragonne a ‘peach’

Blake Shinn struck the first blow at Doomben on Queensland Oaks day winning the Listed The Phoenix 2YO (1350m) aboard Sagaronne for Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds.

An early charge for the lead brought backmarkers into play and Shinn pulled off a gun ride to snare the lion’s share of the $100,000 prizemoney aboard the Real Saga filly.

Shinn went back from a wide gate to travel three deep with a trail before threading his way through the pack in the straight.

Spotting daylight at the 150-metre mark, Sagaronne ($11) knuckled down strongly to overhaul the John O’Shea-trained race favourite Handfast ($2.60) by a long neck.

The well supported Nick Olive-trained race leader Bring A Secret ($3.60) and Rex Lipp’s In His Stride ($8.50) fought it out for third a further half-length away. Bring A Secret got the photo.

In His Stride with Tim Bell aboard was the hard luck story of the race. Jagged back to last from the outside gate, Bell went for an inside run but was cut-out badly at the 250-metre mark. He managed to get going again late aboard the Rothesay youngster but had to be eased off heels near the post and went through the line hard held.

Sagaronne, racing in the Segenhoe colours was strong at the end of the 1350-metres, so time will tell whether she lines-up at Doomben next Saturday for a crack at the $600,000 Group I JJ Atkins (1600m).

Sagaronne firmed into $11 with Sportsbet for next Saturday’s Group I, putting her sixth in line of betting. The Chris Waller-trained duo of Press Statement and Counterattack currently share favouritism at $6.
