Segenhoe Tops Day 2 of Magic Millions Broodmare Sale

The stallion will shuttle to Coolmore Australia later this year at an introductory fee of $66,000 (inc GST) and is expected to cover a strong book of mares in his first southern hemisphere season.

The Party Stand and stakes-placed I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) mare Comprende in foal to Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), who was sold for $1,050,000, were the two lots to break the $1,000,000 mark on Day Two after three reached the figure on Tuesday.

With the Book One sale concluding tomorrow, the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale has already broken new ground with an aggregate of $78,283,000 with 490 fillies and mares sold, surpassing last year’s figure of $74,816,000 from 560 lots sold. The 2017 average is at $159,761 with a median of $90,000 and a clearance rate of 85.66 per cent, with the aggregate setting a new record for any sale conducted by Magic Millions.

The Party Stand (Thorn Park), meanwhile, who also sold in foal to Snitzel as Lot 941, was offered by Segenhoe Stud Australia and purchased by BBA Ireland’s Adrian Nicoll for international clients.

The Party Stand, who won the New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and six races overall, has produced two foals to race including stakes-placed winner Petition (Foxwedge).

Nicoll also revealed he bought Petition (Foxwedge) for $560,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and he told ANZ Bloodstock News that she was the mare he had wanted to leave the sale with.

“She was the one we wanted all week, she is a beautiful mare and she is in foal to the right horse. I bought Petition as a yearling so I know quite a lot about what she can produce,” said Nicoll said. “Petition was a $350,000 foal so she was quite expensive by Foxwedge and she has been very unlucky. She should have won a stakes race and she definitely will win a group race next year. She is a Group One winner herself and she was the mare we wanted.

“She will stay here and probably go to American Pharaoh I would think as there is international people in her and they understand the horse and he was a mighty good horse as well.”

Segenhoe Stud Australia, for owner John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, also bought The Party Stand for $575,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale and at the National Weanling Sale that same year Segenhoe Stud purchased Petition for $350,000.

“She was bought by a world renowned judge in Adrian Nicoll and she is a Group One winner, and in my humble opinion she as good a looking mare as you would see,” O’Brien told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Obviously being in foal to a champion stallion Snitzel helped, but we didn’t expect she would make that much. We thought she would make maybe $600,000 to $700,000. The way the market is at the moment the good mares are making a lot more that you think.”

O’Brien said Camilleri, who bred champion mare Winx (Street Cry), would retain The Party’s Stand’s Exceed And Excel (Danehill) filly and was selling some mares to reduce his numbers.

“Generally John likes to keep it at around 25 mares and at the moment he is a little over that,” he said. “He is trying to buy mares for Vadamos in New Zealand so we are trying to support him but the way the mares are selling here the market is very, very strong.”
